Domosys and DomesticSoft to cross-market PowerBus and OPC Server Solutions.
Domosys Corporation and DomesticSoft, Inc. announced today a strategic partnership between the two companies to provide the control networking industry with a comprehensive suite of OPC Server solutions that interface with the PowerBus technology. This suite includes the following components: Network Builder software to create networks; Network Server software to manage communications with networks locally; and OPC Server software to present the devices on the PowerBus network in an OPC format to the application software.
This means that devices that embed Domosys' PowerBus technology can be automatically discovered and then configured over the local power line or twisted pair medium through the DomesticSoft Network Builder software. The communication link with these nodes is managed by a Windows-based gateway running the Network Server software, which is linked via TCP/IP to a server running the OPC Server software.
The nodes are represented locally and remotely over the Internet as OPC (OLE for process control) compatible nodes by DomesticSoft's OPC Server software. These devices can then be easily integrated into any of the multitude of OPC-compatible system presently found in commercial and industrial environments. OPC tags represent PowerBus virtual variables and device properties, thereby simplifying programming at the OPC-client level.
"The availability of this suite of OPC software solutions is an exciting development for our customers and PowerBus technology", said Evan Price, President of Domosys. "It confirms our commitment to providing our customers with access to non-proprietary network management solutions, and offers existing systems the ability to access the benefits of PowerBus. We are proud to partner with DomesticSoft in such an endeavor."
This release of OPC Server Solutions allows PowerBus adopters to easily create powerful graphical user interfaces for control network systems in residential, commercial, utility, and industrial markets. The Network Server’s support for several control protocols (CEBus, PowerBus, and Notifier security protocol) allows devices to seamlessly interact between networks. Furthermore, the integration of otherwise proprietary systems into single operator workstation solutions for control networks greatly enhances ease of use and reduces hardware cost in deploying systems. This suite is a powerful complement to the Domosys PowerBus technology that offers a multi-featured control network protocol embedded in the low-cost and highly integrated PowerBus chips.
"Working with various control network protocols over the past 12 years has allowed us to quickly qualify PowerBus as a most powerful and innovative technology for the control networking market", said George Getzin, Executive VP of DomesticSoft. "For this reason, it is a natural choice for us to add support for PowerBus to the latest release of our OPC Server Solutions suite. We look forward to further collaboration with Domosys to enable simple and low-cost control networking across multiple markets."
Under the partnership agreement, Domosys and DomesticSoft may cross-market their respective technologies to their customer bases. Domosys will bundle an evaluation license of the DomesticSoft OPC Server solution in the next release of its PowerBus Starter Kit.

The OPC Specification is a non-proprietary technical specification that defines a set of standard interfaces based upon Microsoft’s OLE/COM technology. The application of the OPC standard interface makes interoperability possible between automation/control applications, field systems/devices and business/office applications. Traditionally, each software or application developer was required to write a custom interface, or server/driver, to exchange data with hardware field devices. OPC eliminates this requirement by defining a common, high performance interface that permits this work to be done once, and then easily reused by HMI, SCADA, Control and custom applications.
