Cristal Controls selects Domosys' PowerBus™ Technology for its new intelligent street lighting control system

Domosys Corporation, a leading provider of control networking technology, announced today that Cristal Controls, a pioneer in providing energy management solutions, has selected PowerBus™ as its technology platform for its new street lighting control system. This system enables the control and monitoring of the condition of streetlights remotely.

Unlike streetlights that are controlled by photocells, those with the Cristal Controls system can respond to schedules set for any time of the night. The system also monitors lamp usage and failures. As a result, some of the benefits that the system provides are the reduction of the cost of operating streetlights, the saving of energy, improvements in the quality and quantity of exterior lighting and enhanced security.

The Cristal Controls system uses PowerBus technology to communicate over the AC power lines between their control modules retrofitted in the poles of the streetlights and a gateway, typically located in the local transformer station. One unique advantage of PowerBus over other control networking technologies for street lighting applications is its patent-pending PowerLink™ service that allows every node, such as a streetlight, to act as a dynamic repeater. This greatly extends the communication range. A WAN technology is used to link the gateway to the server software. The operator can access the server software over the Internet and can thus control and monitor the streetlights from a remote location.

The rapid development of this end-to-end system was made possible by combining the expertise of Cristal Controls in intelligent product and system development and the simplicity of PowerBus technology. A prototype version of the system is already in pilot stage with one streetlight manufacturer and also scheduled to be piloted in several cities across North America in early 2005. Broader commercial deployment will start in Q2 2005.
